George Barrell Copybooks

George Barrell came to Phillips Academy at the age of 11 as a member of the class of 1799. This collection is made up of his copybooks and his color drawings. The copybooks were done with his penmanship tutor, who was hired by the student's family apart from the tuition for the academy. The drawings were for his amusement. George Barrell went on to become a merchant and left behind a promising art career.
